Melbourne women are taking online dating to extreme levels, with many going on two dates every night.

Nova 100’s Hughesy and Kate spoke to a range of girls this morning, most notably 22-year-old Melissa from Altona who told them she had been doing ‘extreme online dating’ for six months.

Melissa said her dates ranged from the traditional bite to eat to sexual encounters.
“Sometimes it’s a “date” in inverted commas and sometimes it’s ‘hey you want to go out and grab something to eat’,” she said.

“If I’m comfortable with them I’ll bring them back to my place but there’s their place or there’s rented rooms you can get. “It’s interesting, fun and exciting,” she said. “I mean you have to be safe about it obviously. No point bringing everyone back to your house but if you know what you’re doing and you’re safe about it there’s no risk.”

Melissa said going on so many dates was also helping her save money on food bills.
“I love the Pancake Parlour,” she said.
“Sometimes I’ll get one guy to meet me at the same place so I can just go from one to the next.” She said her friends didn’t know she was going on so many dates.

“That’s what makes it good it’s my little secret, I can do what I want and (tell my friends) I’m busy tonight, sorry.”

Before you reject online dating, however, remember there are risks anytime you become romantically or physically involved with someone. That guy you left Monkey Bar with last weekend said he went to Amherst and seemed nice enough, but how much can you trust anyone you've known for less than 24 hours? In 2010,

“What women want?” has been the question troubling men for ages and dating site Tigerdoom Golf can now give men the definitive answer, “What Women Want In A Man”.
The Golf Dating Site had conducted a weeklong survey asking women-members to list top 3 qualities they seek in a future husband and received 315 responses from women aged from 18 to 62. Respondents to the survey were located in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other countries of the former Soviet Union, as well as in USA, Europe, Australia, Canada and UK.
Below is the list of “Top 10 Most Important Qualities Women Want in a Man” that they want to spend the rest of their lives with.
The top two qualities women want in a man were only separated by a single answer, and they are:
1) Reliable (39% – mentioned by 123 women)
2) Intelligent (39% – mentioned by 122 women)
The third most important quality women want in a man is:
3) Kind (27% – mentioned by 84 women)
The rest of qualities that women seek in a man that made it into top 10 are:
4) Integrity/honesty (23% – 71 women)
5) Financial security/ability to provide for a family (20% – 63 women)
6) Caring (17% – 53 women)
7) Generous/giving (14% – 44 women)
Faithful (13% – 40 women)
9) Mature (12% – 37 women)
10) Sense of humor (11% – 36 women)
Sense of humor, although ending at #10, has strongly made its place into the top 10 qualities women want in a man, followed by “understanding” (8.5%), “goal oriented/ambitious” (6.7%), “confident” and “loving/loves me” (both at 6.3%).
Only 3.5% of women mentioned looks as being a top priority when seeking a long-term partner, preceded by “positive/optimistic” (3.8%), and ranked at the same importance as “educated”, “masculine” and “tolerant” (all at 3.5%).

Meeting Spouse Online

A couple of years ago, Jennifer Montgomery was reluctant to try online dating although friends and family had recommended it.

"I kept saying 'No, I can meet guys on my own,' " the 35-year-old West Lafayette woman said.
But after a bad date and a fit of frustration, she decided to give it a try. She met Brice Koning the winter of 2010 through an online dating website, and he proved to be a match. The two are engaged and planning to marry in September.

As technology use changes the cultural landscape, more adults are gravitating toward online dating as a means to meet a suitable spouse. One out of every six couples (17 percent) married in the past three years have met their spouse through an online dating website, according to a 2009-10 Match.com study.

But like with any new technology there are some gliches that might arise as people try to court in cyberspace.
Online dating is the third most common way that people are meeting spouses. The most common place people met their significant other was at work or school. Meeting a spouse through a friend or family member came in second, according to the study, which was conducted by research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey.
"I think one of the reasons why we are seeing online dating increasing to such an extent is because young people are in an extremely mobile geographical community, which makes it much more difficult to connect," said Glenn Sparks, communications professor at Purdue University.

Years ago, people would marry others from within their geographical communities. For instance, in 1940 about 76 percent of residents in New Haven, Conn., married someone who lived within 20 blocks of them, according to a study published in 1943 in the American Journal of Sociology.
So online dating websites are creating new communities in cyberspace for people who are not rooted in one geographical location.
"It's just a natural thing to turn to because it offers something that the young person really can't do on their own," Sparks said. Sparks added that after college, which is a microcosm of the real world full of one's peers, it becomes increasingly difficult to find someone to date. Koning experienced this after he graduated from Purdue University in 2004. So he tried online dating sporadically.
"I didn't want to meet somebody at a bar," the 29-year-old said. "How many opportunities do you have to see who is out there?"

Sparks said while these websites can be helpful in matching people, the matches often are isolated and completely devoid of true community. So he advises that if couples meet online they should join a club, church or other organization to create a common community in order to share a life together.
He said this will give the couple common ground and accountability, and diffuse some of the pressure on the significant other to fulfill relational needs. "As isolated as we are, when we attach to that one other person, the burden upon that ... person becomes very focused and intense such that sometimes the relationship implodes," he said. "They don't have the cushion of that larger community."

As Maryland resident Gary Giordano is being scrutinized by law enforcement in Aruba, other women have stepped forward to allege he has been violent with them and even, that he secretly videotaped their sexual encounters. Several say they met Giordano on the popular dating website, Match.com.

Match.com issued a statement to 9News, saying allegations like this between individuals who meet on Match.com "are extremely rare, but it doesn't make them any less horrifying." The online dating site also asks its members to report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior.

According to dating and relationship coach Michelle Jacoby, founder of DC Matchmaking " In 2011, if you're not dating online, you're kind of a dating dinosaur."
Jacoby advises online daters to tell at least one friend the user name and phone number of the person you're meeting.
"You can say to your best friend if you don't hear from me by midnight, there's a problem and this is the person I'm out with and this is the number he gave me. So there's somebody keeping tabs on your safety that evening," said Jacoby. Also recommended: setting up a free Google Voice account, providing a phone number that can be used just for dating.

"You can give that number out when you're dating, so that nobody knows your real cell phone number. If that person starts to be bothersome, you can just block their calls," said Jacoby.
She also recommends setting up an email account that isn't your name and doesn't include any personal information.
